Asia's rise and international migration

International Studies Programme
By prof.dr. Frank N. Pieke
Globalization in the last twenty years has generated unprecedented flows of international migrants, bringing economic growth and prosperity, but also widespread xenophobia and a strengthening of the nation-state. The rise of newly developed countries might lead to a new shift in the balance of the international migration order. Western countries will increasingly find that the main challenge is not to keep unwanted immigrants out, but to compete effectively with newly developed countries for the labour and skills of an increasingly global workforce.

Duaal Promoveren

Centrum Regionale Kennisontwikkeling (CRK)
Voorts zal dr. The Role of the International Prosecutor in Perspective

Grotius Centre
The prosecution of international crimes poses unique challenges for international justice (e.g., in terms of investigation, cooperation, trial management, victim participation, outreach).
The lecture will focus on the role and mandate of an International Prosecutor. It will provide an overview of prosecutorial strategy and practice, drawing on experiences from multiple courts and tribunals. Special attention will be devoted to the practice of Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) which has started its first proceedings, in line with its mandate to hold trials for the people accused of carrying out the attack of 14 February 2005 which killed 23 people (including the former prime minister of Lebanon, Rafiq Hariri, and injured many others).

Norman Farrell is STL Prosecutor. He has previously served as Deputy Prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and as Head of the Appeals Section/Senior Appeals Counsel (2002 – 2003) at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR).
