Carsten Stahn is　Professor Internationaal Strafrecht en Global Justice en Programma Directeur van het Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies. Hij heeft hiervoor gewerkt als Legal Officer bij het Internationaal Strafhof (2003-2007), en als Research Fellow bij het Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (2000-2003). Hij heeft zijn doctorstitel behaald aan de Humboldt Universiteit van Berlin (summa cum laude), na het behalen van zijn eerste en tweede staatsexamen in Duitsland. Hij heeft zijn LL.M. behaald aan New York University en Cologne/Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne).

Professor Stahn is de auteur van The Law and Practice of International Territorial Administration: Versailles to Iraq and Beyond (Cambridge University Press, 2008/2010) en vele artikelen over internationaal strafrecht en transitional justice. Tevens is hij redacteur van verscheidene bundels op dit gebied, zoals The Emerging Practice of the International Criminal Court (Martinus Nijhoff, 2008), Future Perspectives on International Criminal Justice (T.M.C. Asser Press – Cambridge University Press, 2009) en The International Criminal Court and Complementarity: From Theory to Practice (Cambridge University Press, 2011).　

Professor Stahn is voorts projectleider van een vierjarig onderzoeksproject over Post-Conflict Justice and Local Ownership, dat wordt gesubsidieerd door het NWO. Ook is hij senior ICC editor van het Leiden Journal of International Law , Executive Editor van het Criminal Law Forum en correspondent van de Netherlands International Law Review. Zijn werk is geciteerd in jurisprudentie van het Internationaal Strafhof, het Internationaal Gerechtshof en het Europese Hof voor de Rechten van de Mens.
